Cole and Morgan were walking the dogs on May 18 (the last time I blogged!) after school, as they do nearly every day. While they were at the park, Cole decided to climb a tree and Morgan took all 3 dogs. At that time, two unleashed dogs came by and our dogs got all crazy and started barking. During this, the 2 girls, Maggie & Abby, got into a fight. Cole hopped down from the tree and went to help Morgan. Cole grabbed Maggie's leash close to her neck and started to pull them apart. As soon as Maggie let go of Abby, she latched onto Cole's leg (right lower calf, near his achilles), until she realized it was him, not Abby.
Morgan (& Bert & Abby) ran home to get me, and I swear, my heart stopped. She couldn't speak, she was shrieking with fear and tears, and was more than concerned about Cole. Maggie stayed by Cole's side. A neighbor kid went to get his mom to help.
We spent a couple hours at the doctor's office, waiting for the area to get numb, irrigating the wounds, and getting stitches. In the small wound, Cole got 2 deep sutures, and 2 skin sutures. In the larger wound, he got 4 deep sutures, and 6 skin sutures.
Cole has such a huge heart and was so brave getting his stitches. His first concern was the dogs, that he didn't want anything to happen to them and that it was his fault for getting in the middle of them. I reminded him that he was way above them on the food chain. His other concern was questioning the doctor on his every move..."what is irrigating?", "what are prophylactic antibiotics?", "why don't you put dissolving sutures on the outside, too?"... Morgan was willing to give Cole her allowance for the next 60 years, and anything else he wanted... it was very sweet to see her concern for Cole and know that they truly care for each other.
Here are some pics of the sutures. Cole is healing up very well, although he will have some scars. He says his story will be that he was surfing on the Great Salt Lake and got bit by a shark...
